![]() the extreme heat produced will quickly melt the insulators on the jumper cables, clamping them forever on the battery which will be next in line as the plastic top will melt and bend. With an instant surge of electricity, the first to face the wrath and the consequence of an experiment would the jumper cables. Needless to say, it will not be tolerated well by the system or the components within and depending on certain factors will incur damage that is mostly going to be severe and irreparable. If the positives and negatives are switched, the battery will try to compensate and make the negative 12 volts into a positive charge resulting in a huge surge of power and an enormous amount of heat to be produced. The cable on the positive terminal uses +12V while the one on the negative side uses -12V. Each terminal of a car battery uses 12V of current with positive and negative orientation. As an optional step, this is a great time to consider cleaning your battery terminals.Connecting the battery terminals in reverse can cause serious damage to the battery itself, the electrical components, and even to yourself.Be sure to take care when lifting the battery out of the vehicle. Generally, most batteries have some sort of grab handle, but it may be broken or missing entirely. Not every vehicle has this, but remove the battery bracket/brace if so equipped.Repeat the steps for the positive battery terminal and take note of how the terminals are positioned.Make sure the battery terminal isn’t stretching or binding too much. Wiggle the negative battery terminal off of the battery pos, and move it out of the way where it doesn’t touch anything. You likely don’t need to remove the nut or bolt entirely off, but just loosen it enough to get the terminals off. Take your wrench or ratchet and slowly crank or turn counter-clockwise. Start by removing the negative battery terminal first. The negative terminal may have a negative sign nearby, but not always. Typically, the positive terminal has a small plastic cover with a plus sign that can be easily pried back. ![]() Remember, positive is red, negative is black.
